This section is based on Eric Wolstenholme's work on simplifying the System Archetypes - popularised by Peter Senge, Daniel Kim and others - to four core archetypes:

  • “underachievement”
  • “out of control”
  • “relative achievement”, and
  • “relative control”

The semi-generic archetypes that can be mapped onto the generic “underachievement archetype” are:

  • Limits to success
  • Tragedy of the commons, and
  • Growth and underinvestment

The semi-generic archetypes that can be mapped onto the generic “out of control” archetype are:

  • Fixes that fail
  • Shifting the burden, and
  • Accidental adversaries

The semi-generic archetype which can be mapped onto the generic “relative achievement” archetype is:

  • Success to the successful

The semi-generic archetypes which can be mapped onto the generic “relative control” archetype are:

  • Escalation, and
  • Drifting goals

Eric has also separately diagrammed Problem and Solution archetypes and added organisational boundaries.
